Problem Solving Strategy based on 'Polya's Model For Problem Solving'

Step 1 Understanding the problem:
        - Visualise the information
        - Organise the information
        - Connect the information

Step 2 Devising a plan:
        -   Select the strategy
        -   Attempt common heuristics

Step 3 Carrying out the plan
        -   Pupils start solving problem through the selected strategy
        -   Pupils can revise & modify the plan if necessary

Step 4 Reflecting
        -  Checking the solution
        -  Improving on the method used
        -  Seeking alternative solutions
        -  Extending the method to other problems

The Model Method is the main problem solving approach
All pupils (from P1) are compulsory to draw models when solving problem sums
for daily practice. Types of models to be identified for teaching in each level.

Problem Solving Heuristics (PSH) to be implemented in a spiral approach:
(Use P.S.S. to solve challenging & non-routine problems)

Activity-based lessons in teaching & learning of new concepts
The use of manipulative (concrete materials) for hands-on lessons is part
of the learning experience of the pupils.

A Story Sum A Day (ASSAD)
Rationale: To address the fear of solving problems.
Pupils to solve a problem as ‘Warm-Up’ exercise each day:
Each pupil has termly ASSAD book for practice.

Topical Practice
The use of ‘Discover Maths Topical Practice’ to replace worksheets
for
further practice.

Extension Learning
P1 to P5: Use +Venture magazine for extension learning
P6 teachers use BBA worksheets for extension learning.

IT-based Learning

Pupils are taught basic computer skills. They learn Mathematic using the computers. Pupils are encouraged to be independent learners through some IT initiatives in school such as online assessments and individual project works.

  Learning Support Mathematics

It is a specialised programme to support and provide help early for Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils with weak basic numeracy skills.  Pupils in this programme learn Mathematics through hands-on activities, songs, customised board games and internet games.  Pupils receive more individual attention from teacher as class size is small.  Pupils learn to build up their confidence, perserverence and interest in learning Mathematics.
